The 1st Circuit has upheld a lower court ruling slashing a lawyer’s contingency fee with two clients from about $292,000 to $50,000. The circuit unanimously concluded that a lower court judge did not err in finding that attorney Zack Hawthorn’s contracted contingency fee with two whistleblower clients was excessive.
BP posted the results of its probe into the Deepwater Horizon disaster Wednesday, and it assigned blame to all companies involved — including BP. Transocean, a global offshore drilling company taken to task in the BP report, blasted the findings as “self-serving,” and said the report tried to conceal “the critical factor” of BP’s “fatally flawed well design.” Said Transocean in its statement: “In both its design and construction, BP made a series of cost-saving decisions that increased risk — in some cases, severely.”
While progress still needs to be made, what the few women currently managing Pennsylvania law firms have proven is that despite being in the minority, they can do their jobs free of gender constraints.
