Calif. AG Jerry Brown Files $34M Suit Against Well-Known ‘Tax Lady’

California’s attorney general sued “tax lady” Roni Deutch for more than $34 million on Monday, alleging that her law firm regularly violates state law by making false promises that it will help people resolve disputes with the Internal Revenue Service. Attorney General Jerry Brown contends that Deutch overstates her TV claims of winning tax battles with the IRS. She advertises a success rate of up to 99 percent, yet successfully reduces the amount of money her clients owe in taxes in just 10 percent of cases, the lawsuit says.

Balch & Bingham Dropped From Ala. AG’s Plans to Sue BP

A prominent Birmingham law firm that Alabama Attorney General Troy King had tapped to sue BP over the Gulf oil spill will not take part in the litigation because of a potential conflict. A King spokesman said Tuesday the law firm Balch Bingham would not represent the state in the lawsuit because its Mississippi offices previously represented Transocean Ltd., owner of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. If the lawsuit is filed, there will most likely be a new attorney general before it comes to trial, as King was defeated in the June 1 Republican primary.

The 7th Circuit has determined that insurers for a seller of sippy cups, baby bottles, nipples and other plastic products had no duty to defend the company in a multidistrict class action. Finding that the insurers were not responsible for defending Avent America in a so-called no-injury class action, a panel ruled that the lawsuit alleged only economic damages that Avent’s insurance didn’t cover
