A suit pitting a Georgia gun dealer against New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg got airtime at the Georgia Court of Appeals on Tuesday, when former Georgia congressman Bob Barr and litigator Peter Canfield faced off over a single page that wasn’t filed in the court record. The court’s decision about that sheet of paper will determine whether the gun dealer may proceed with a suit against Bloomberg, whom the dealer claims defamed it in his campaign against illegal sales of weapons used against New Yorkers.
A wrongful death case against a Georgia bar for serving alcohol to a customer who was in a fatal car crash on the way home has been settled for $1 million, after the judge granted the plaintiff’s motion for spoliation sanctions and struck much of the defendant’s evidence. According to the order, the bar had recorded over most of four hours of videotape recorded inside the bar, and destroyed the tabs for the driver’s two drinking companions and that night’s “spill sheets” showing free drinks given out by bartenders.
A Georgia federal judge ruled Tuesday against Troy Davis’ claims that he is innocent of the 1989 murder for which he’s been sentenced to death. In an unusual pairing, a Georgia judge assisted an Alabama federal judge in mediating settlements in more than 200 suits in which plaintiffs said liquid vitamin supplements made them ill. Plaintiffs complained that after taking Total Body Formula liquid supplements, they experienced ailments like prolonged and painful fingernail and toenail loss, and severe joint pain and muscle cramps. Some consumers later experienced severe kidney problems and associated health problems.
